The picture has graced a wall in their home for many years and it's loss starts Rosemary bickering about Lionel's 'hallucinations' (he talks to Queen Victoria). When the thief reveals himself, they take the opportunity to consider whether to re-hang or replace the picture (ie a relationship metaphor for 'stay as we are' or 'start anew.'
